Alternate picking

Level 1–3 · 5 exercises

In alternate picking the pick always goes down-up-down-up, no matter what. It gives rock and metal solos rhythmic precision and punch.

Key points
  • The motion comes from the wrist, not the elbow.
  • Use very little of the pick tip.
  • Accent the first note of each group to stay in time.
Common mistakes
  • Wide strokes that waste time.
  • Tensing shoulder and arm as you speed up.
