Level 2 · 2 exercises

Hybrid picking uses the pick (p) together with the picking-hand middle (m) and ring (a) fingers. It makes string skips easy and gives a bright attack: the heart of country and lots of modern rock.

Key points
  • The pick plays the low strings, the fingers the high ones.
  • Fingers pluck by pulling the string up and away.
  • Start with two strings, then move to arpeggios.
Common mistakes
  • Fingers much quieter than the pick.
  • Moving the whole hand instead of just the fingers.
