Rhythm and palm muting

← All lessons
Level 1–2 · 2 exercises

A great guitarist is first of all a great rhythm player. Palm muting (M) and muted notes give riffs control and groove, from rock to funk.

Key points
  • Palm mute: edge of the palm on the strings, near the bridge.
  • In funk the picking hand never stops.
  • Play with the metronome and with the channel's tracks.
Common mistakes
  • Palm too far forward: notes turn dull.
  • Stopping the picking hand in funk rests.

RT1

Palm muting and riffs

Rhythm and palm mutingBeginner70→160 BPM
Goal

The "chug" of rock rhythm guitar.

How to do it
  • M = palm mute: rest the edge of your picking palm on the strings near the bridge.
  • Notes without M ring open: lift the palm just for those.
  • All downstrokes for a more aggressive sound.

Inspired by: Metodi rock e metal (ritmica)

RT2

Funk 16ths with muted notes

Rhythm and palm mutingIntermediate70→140 BPM
Goal

The funk groove: the picking hand never stops.

How to do it
  • The picking hand always moves down and up in 16ths.
  • M notes are "ghosts": barely touched, almost silent.
  • Accent only the full notes: the groove comes from the contrast.
