Level 2–3 · 3 exercises

In tapping the picking-hand finger strikes the string on the fretboard (T), then pulls off to the fretting-hand notes. It allows huge intervals and lightning arpeggios: the Van Halen sound.

Key points
  • Tap with your middle finger so you keep holding the pick.
  • The tap pull-off flicks the string slightly up or down.
  • Mute idle strings with the picking-hand palm.
Common mistakes
  • A tap that is quieter than the other notes.
  • Open-string noise during the pull-off.

Reference: Eddie Van Halen / Joe Satriani
